TOURISM

The tourism infrastructure consists of a main lodge/dining area with a commercial kitchen, two dorm-style brick cabins (sleep 6-8 people) with two private baths, three new 1-2 person wood cabins with private bath, 3 new brick cabins in the garden/nursery area to accommodate more adventurous budget travelers and volunteers, a tiled wood-fired central shower facility, a large pavilion for workshops/group gatherings/ yoga/meditation, a butterfly conservatory, 5 distinct and well maintained trails, 4 waterfalls, one with a natural swimming hole, a certified and potable spring-fed water system, a solar and micro hydro-electric system and internet at the main lodge.


THE FARM

The finca covers 247 acres of cloud forest at 4000 ft above sea level. Approximately 20% (24.5 Ac/ 14.1 Mzns/ 10 Ha) of the land is dedicated for the tourism buildings which includes the central lodge, main cabins, garden cabins, roads and trails; 20% is planted with shade grown coffee (26 Ac/ 15 mzn/ 10.6 Ha – and can be expanded, vegetables and fruit trees; and the remaining 70% of the property is a tropical primary and secondary forest and former cow pastures now being reforested. 

Coffee growing is part of the culture of the northern territories of Nicaragua. FEV cultivates Arabica Coffee in several varieties: Parainema, Ethiosar, Maragojipe, Caturra, Red Catuai, Bourbon and Java to mention a few. The farm aims to produce the best quality coffee and at the same time to protect and conserve the ecosystem. The farm uses responsible and sustainable coffee farming techniques from seed to cup. The pulping and washing of the coffee during the annual harvest (December - February) is done at the farm in the farm’s wet mill then dried in the yard for a few days before transporting the bags to the dry mill in Matagalpa for the final processing. 

The farm’s organic vegetable garden has the most delectable veggies and fruits - kales, squashes, lettuces, beets and radishes, as well as the oranges, lemons and passion fruit in a small orchard.
